How To Exercise with a Toddler

How To Exercise with a Toddler

So how do you exercise with a toddler? For most mamas the thought of exercising when you have a toddler right by your side is one that often discourages you from working out.

Waking up to an alarm early in the morning when it’s dark outside and warm in bed is never nice.

And the amount of negative self-talk I do to convince myself that getting up at this stupid hour to exercise in incredible and often very persuasive.

But I get up.

And I’m always glad I do.

It’s all about adjusting to what’s happening in your life and right now, I’m going to share with you how I fit in my exercise whilst pregnant with baby number two and a crazy, fun-filled toddler bouncing off the walls.

Remember when they didn’t move? When they were a baby and just lied there?

Or when they started to crawl, but it was so slow and cute you could just grab them before they went too far.

And so much you just wanted them to start walking, all by themselves.

And then they did.

And then you had a toddler.

Yep, I know. I’ve got one too.

And they are the best, but they make it super difficult to fit everything else in your day.

Including exercise.

So my husband and I made a pact.

Regardless of when our toddler, Max, wakes, we do breakfast at 7am. Unless of course he sleeps beyond 7am and we sit there in amazement thinking about all the things we could do with this time and then… he wakes.

So the rule is, 7am is Max time.

If he wakes earlier than this one of us is with him and the other gets to do their exercise.

Look, it doesn’t always work. My husband had to leave yesterday by 6.10am, so I got up at 5.30am to do my exercise and you would not believe it… Max slept until 7.45am! If only I had of known!

Any way, no need to dwell on the past. I got some extra time up my sleeve and had a super productive morning that by 9am I was ready for second breakfast. Monday, Wednesday, Friday is my husbands time and Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday is mine.

I never thought I’d be so fixated on it, but given it’s only a few times a week, I know I need to prioritise it.

I get my PregActive Mobile APP and go do my workout.

I love the app because I never have to re-login and I’m literally at my workout in seconds, which for a time-poor Mama like me, is perfect!

We’re down to one nap a day and it’s anywhere from 40 minutes to 1.5 hours.

That’s when I get my work done! I used to work at night, but being pregnant has made me super sleepy and I simply just do my 10 minute PregActive Bed Time routine and then hit the pillow.. embarrassingly early. So early, I’m not even going to tell you!

In addition to this I stretch and move throughout the day, because my body needs it.

I do pelvic floor exercises when I brush my teeth.

I do squats when I push Max on the swing.

I do a seated glute stretch when I sit and feed him lunch at the high-chair.

I do all that because if I don’t, I get aches and pains.

Pregnancy is one of those incredible miracles where your body changes a lot.

And you need to look after it.
